| Experts: SSL certificate no guarantee of safety
SAN JOSE, Calif. - When a small padlock appears in the corner of your Web browser's address bar or the entire bar turns green, it seems like a powerful signal you're safe to proceed. But experts say the SSL certificates those green lights signify — digital stamps of approval that Web sites buy to prove they're running a legitimate business and can send and receive encrypted data safely — don't provide the safety they seem to. "They instill some sense of security, but that could be a dangerously false sense of security," said Paul Mutton, a researcher with UK-based security firm Netcraft Ltd. .
Shares of the drug maker Wyeth are looking attractive, analysts say
The world's biggest-selling drugs are now for cancer, cholesterol and high blood pressure, but Alzheimer's medicines could definitely join their ranks," Cherukuri said. Another shock to Wyeth's system could come by the middle of this year, when Sun is expected to begin shipping tablet forms of Effexor to U.S. drugstores. Bigger jolts are expected in July 2010, when other drug makers will introduce their copycat forms of Effexor, Wyeth's biggest product with sales of $3.8 billion a year. The company is already fighting to keep its traction following recent U.S. rejections or delays for many drugs it had hoped would eventually offset plunging sales of Effexor, including treatments for schizophrenia, depression, hot flashes and constipation. Shares of Wyeth have fallen 30 percent in the past nine months, as the setbacks piled on top of each other.
Initial unemployment claims rise
WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Initial claims for unemployment benefits increased to 375,000 for the week ending Jan. 26, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Thursday. The seasonally adjusted figure was an increase of 69,000 compared with the week ending Jan 19. New claims filed by former federal civilian employees for the week ending Jan. 19 dropped to 1,540, which was 710 less than the previous week, the department said.
McCain’s life experiences will suit road ahead
John McCain was not my first choice. Or even the second or third. He'd be far more appealing with a Southern conservative as a running mate — former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, or Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, to name three. But conservative running mate or not, Mitt Romney's class-act exit leaves McCain without serious challenge for the nomination. And as both Romney and McCain noted in same-day speeches to the Conservative Political Action Conference, this election is not about shades of gray. "Elections in this country are fought within margins of small differences," said McCain. "This one will not be. We are arguing about hugely consequential things." Romney's departing words defined the immediate course for conservatives.
Snapper rules mean healthy fishery
Skeptics contend that there are plenty of fish in the sea. But most of the population we see is very young, years away from achieving maximum spawning potential. The red snapper is a remarkable fish that can live to over 50 years of age, producing increasing numbers of offspring as it matures. Catching smaller, younger fish is a serious threat to the rebuilding of this vital fish population, robbing our waters of generations upon generations of snapper.Strengthening the snapper population has never been solely an environmental question. Building a sustainable red snapper fishery is critical to a healthy Gulf economy, as well. The future of Florida charter boats, commercial fleets, seafood buyers, restaurants, fishing gear makers and retailers, and hotels, motels and marinas is riding upon thriving fisheries.Just as there are no impenetrable walls separating state and federal waters, successful fisheries management depends on strong cooperation between state and federal entities.Florida's vote on Thursday marks the day when the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission can join the actions of the federal council and other Gulf states with complementary rules for red snapper and help speed population recovery and its associated benefits. If the state fails to act, the recovery effort will be hamstrung possibly necessitating further limitations in federal waters, up to and including early closure of the season. The federal government and two Gulf states have stepped to the plate.
SOCIAL INSECURITY High-Interest Lenders Tap Elderly, Disabled
DOTHAN, Ala. -- One recent morning, dozens of elderly and disabled people, some propped on walkers and canes, gathered at Small Loans Inc. Many had borrowed money from Small Loans and turned over their Social Security benefits to pay back the high-interest lender. Now they were waiting for their "allowance" -- their monthly check, minus Small Loans' cut. .
Supporters of Brotherhood-backed candidates
We have Christians that are members of liberal-leftist groups, Communist groups, conservative groups and the NDP. It's only a display of the diversity of their political beliefs." Finding the right balanceJust as moderate Islamist movements have been successful in earning government recognition in several Arab countries including Jordan, Yemen, Morocco and Tunisia, Madi says he believes in his chances of not only gaining government approval, but effecting change in the political arena. He need look no further afield than Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina for inspiration, but change will come only if he can attract a base of real support —something even stalwart parties such as Al-Wafd seem unable to do today. “We're the unrepresented section of Egyptian society," says Madi. “Our segment makes up a large part of this society.
