TRUCK GENIES

Among those helping out was Gene Winfield, a famous California custom car builder who will be honored at the Autorama as Builder of the Year. He assisted with chopping down the top of the truck.

"A lot of people contributed to this project with their money and time, and we couldn't have done it without their help," Sobbry said. "This was a truly unique experience. Everyone was focused on one goal, and all egos were checked at the door."

Lilly said he plans to pamper his new prized possession. While he is looking forward to driving it, he said he recognizes the truck is more of a showpiece than everyday transportation.

"I already have another car," he said, "so I'll probably just get the truck out on nice summer days. ... I can't wait."

Trial looms in transfer of DWP funds

The city of Los Angeles lost a key legal argument Monday and now will have to go to trial to defend the annual transfer of about $30million in Department of Water and Power water-service revenue to the city's general fund.

The ruling by a Superior Court judge to deny the city's motion for summary judgment comes as another potential setback for an already cash-strapped city facing a $155 million budget deficit by June 30 and as much as $500 million next year.

Because of the uncertainty of the transfers, the city hasn't included them in the current budget, nor in its financial projections.

But the DWP case is set to go to trial March 26 and, pending the outcome, the utility has set aside $63.3 million representing two years of surplus water revenue slated for transfer to city coffers.

Can Hillary win? No, says Clifford Orwin

It's all downhill from here," he wrote Feb. 19, notwithstanding primaries in Ohio and Texas, and even Pennsylvania in April.

So Ms. Clinton's nail-biting victories Tuesday in Ohio and Texas Race still on as Clinton posts key wins don't change much? Prof. Orwin doesn't think so, and he's willing to defend his delegate-based thesis when he joins us online Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. EST to respond to your questions.

Conroy pressured to scrap Opel funds

This has prompted the telco to reiterate its call for Kevin Rudd to scrap the payment to the Optus and Elders Opel consortium. In a letter obtained by The Australian, Telstra argues that the Opel deal has become a "gross waste of taxpayers money" following Telstra's decision to offer high-speed internet using copper-based ADSL2+ technology in an additional 900 telephone exchanges, reaching more than 2 million users. The letter was sent to Communications Minister Stephen Conroy on February 12, six days after Telstra boss Sol Trujillo and the Prime Minister held a joint press conference to announce the ADSL2+ upgrade. The equipment was installed in exchanges 18 months ago. "With Telstra's announcement this week, it appears that every taxpayer-funded Opel ADSL2+ enablement will be in an exchange from which ADSL2+ is, or shortly will be, provided commercially," Telstra public policy chief Phil Burgess wrote.

Race to the bottom is on

The first tasty offering of silliness du jour came from The New York Times (Motto: "All the News That Gives Right-Wing Nuts Fits").

For the most part, I think the Times does an excellent job of irritating people who deserve to be irritated. Without its mostly fine reporting, we the people would only know the half of what King George and Sir Dick have been up to. Me the person commends its good work.

If you think differently, let me point out that the Times has a public editor (think of an old-school teacher with a big paddle) who comes along after the reporters write a big story and tells them what they did wrong. After he has demolished their work, he presumably goes off and has lunch by himself.

My point is that you may think the Times very biased, but I have a feeling you don't have a public editor yourself.

Sophie Monk Says Benji Madden Didn't Leave Her For Paris Hilton

Rumors began swirling this past weekend that Benji and Paris became engaged after the celebutante was spotted with a diamond on her wedding finger.

People first reported the news after Paris was captured on camera, exiting XIV Karats, a jewelry store in Beverly Hills, sporting the sparkler.

Paris has also been spotted with a "B" necklace, believed to be for Benji. Coincidentally, while Sophie was dating Benji, she also wore a "B" around her neck.

Virgin Media are hell bent on self destructing :-(

Now, three Internet providers in Britain have teamed up to try to obtain a piece of online advertising for themselves. The three companies — BT, Carphone Warehouse and Virgin Media — announced a deal last week with a company called Phorm, whose technology tracks Web users and sends them ads related to their interests. Phorm said it would set up a new online advertising platform called the Open Internet Exchange, which any Web site would be allowed to join. Proceeds from ads shown on these publishers' sites will be shared with BT, Carphone Warehouse and Virgin Media, which together represent more than two-thirds of Britain's Internet access market. The three Internet providers have agreed to give Phorm access to customers' browsing records, letting it track a Web user's every move.

Quicken Loans www.quickenloans.com

This uncluttered site is deceptively deep with information useful for first-time homebuyers and those refinancing. Explanations are clear and calculators plentiful, including a tax-saving calculator and one that compares a 15-year with a 30-year loan. The site itself originates mortgages in 50 states and manages everything from the point when you get a rate quote through the closing. To get your mortgage rate, fill out the form online and submit it. Then, within one business day, a Quicken loan specialist calls for a person-to-person loan interview. Well organized and easy to navigate.

BEST: Calculators and knowledgeable customer-support reps.

WORST: The home page teases with low rates, but they often apply to places like Nevada.

Eagles' Banner, Reid say they don't know origin of Sheppard trade ...

The Eagles' president said yesterday that he will spend most of his time at the NFL scouting combine not looking at college players, but talking with agents.

"They're all here and they're all wanting to have dinner and have lunch and have breakfast, and you better bring your credit card. It's a good chance to get to know them," said Banner, as he and the Eagles prepared not just for the April draft but for the start of free agency a week from today. "Most of the ones we meet with are ones that have our players, but you never know when you're going to want to have a good relationship with somebody. Almost all the deals in the league are done over the phone, and that's a difficult way to negotiate, so you want to make sure you have a personal connection with people."

There is an excellent chance that Banner's dining schedule includes either Lamont Smith or Peter Schaffer, the agents who represent Birds cornerback Lito Sheppard.
