Chase Bank Accuses Florida Law Firms of Running Debt-Relief Scam

Chase Bank USA is suing two Coral Springs, Fla., attorneys specializing in reducing consumer debt and South Florida affiliates, claiming they are engaging in blatantly illegal and fraudulent practices.

The federal suit filed Friday in Wilmington, Del., accuses Hess Kennedy Chartered, lawyer Laura Hess, Edward Kennedy, affiliated companies and others of using "an unlawful debt elimination scheme" relying on lawsuits challenging valid credit card charges.

Attorney Jeffrey Campos of Coral Springs and the Legal Debt Center, which has the same Coral Springs address and suite number as Hess' law firm, also are named as defendants. In addition, attorneys general in Florida, North Carolina and West Virginia are looking into Hess Kennedy's operations, and the Florida Bar has moved to suspend Hess' license.

Study finds high levels of stain-resistance ingredient in Conasauga ...

DALTON, Ga. — Five years after federal regulators began seeking changes in the makeup of a chemical used to produce carpet stain repellent, researchers have found “staggeringly high" amounts of the EPA advisory board-labeled “likely carcinogen" in the Conasauga River.

Former University of Georgia professor Aaron Fisk, who oversaw a graduate student study measuring amounts of the chemical in rivers in 2006 and 2007, said levels of perfluorooctanoic acid and its compounds in the Conasauga were among the highest ever measured in water at a nonspill location.

“These levels are staggeringly high," he said. “Nobody should be eating fish in that Loopers Bend area."

Drip wastewater disposal gains favor

Marin County has a pending update to its septic-system policy that would add subsurface drip to its list of allowed alternative systems.

Since April, Napa County has approved some 50 subsurface drip systems, with more than half installed so far, according to Sheldon Sapoznik, who oversees septic systems for the county Environmental Management Department.

The majority of plan submittals for alternative systems have disposal to subsurface drip, he said. Its a big shift. We had a half-dozen submitted with one site plan resubmitted so they would have subsurface drip.

Many of the Napa County projects are rural homes, but some are wineries. For example, a subsurface drip system was designed to handle process wastewater from Whitehall Lane Winery near St.

Hain faces damaging "sleaze" probe in donations scandal

However the scale of the under-reporting caused astonishment among MPs and triggered calls for him to consider his position.

Shadow work and pensions secretary Chris Grayling said that it had shown "breathtaking incompetence".

However allies today sought to rally round the beleaguered minister, insisting that it was a "perfectly innocent oversight".

Labour MP Martin Linton, who was part of Mr Hain's campaign team, said it was not "a big deal" and that such things could "happen very easily in politics".

"Anyone who has worked with Peter Hain... would know that it could only be what he says it is - a perfectly innocent oversight - and he is very sorry for it," he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

He said the money involved was "a fairly modest amount", comparing it with the 260 million dollars (£133m)spent by US President George Bush on the Republican primary elections in 2004.
